All'inizio del 1993 Johnny Cash registrò un album di demo a Nashville, canzoni che aveva scritto nel corso di vari anni. Subito dopo le session Johnny incontrò il produttore Rick Rubin, quelle registrazioni furono accantonate e i due iniziarono la prolifica partnership musicale degli American Recordings, una collaborazione che sarebbe durata per i restanti anni della vita di Cash.
Circa trent'anni dopo, John Carter Cash, figlio di Johnny e June Carter Cash, riscopre quelle canzoni isolando la voce e la chitarra acustica di Johnny ed arricchendole di nuovi arrangiamenti. John Carter insieme al co-produttore David Fergie Ferguson ha scelto un gruppo di musicisti che già avevano suonato con John, il chitarrista Marty Stuart e il bassista Dave Roe, oltre al batterista Pete Abbott e li portò al Cash Cabin di Hendersonville, Tennessee, per registrare e dare nuova vita alle tracce, riportando il suono alle radici e al cuore delle canzoni.
